Although we prefer the hands-on photocopied intimacy of good ol' fashion DIY zines, zines are fuckin' dead so long live the newest way to circulate unpopular ideas and cultural interests left of the dial (and a gang of other bullshit). So in appropriate tribute we dedicate our first post to the the deceased analog grandpa of American indie media.

PS - We realize this topic was probably beat to death 10-15 years ago when the zine actually died but you'll have to forgive us, we just got the memo.

PSS - This post is not meant to discourage those out there still fetishizing over obsolete formats. Paper zines/flyers/posters are still a very valid and viable method for distributing ideas and information on a grassroots level, we only encourage that you use discretion. The hardcore and punk scenes killed a lot of trees.

DIY Guide #1 courtesy of crimethinc

TSHO favorites Crimethinc have been kind enough to post there entire catalog of zines, stickers, posters, logo, etc. on the web at http://www.crimethinc.com/tools/downloads/

Over the years this amorphous anarchist collective of ex-workers has amassed a thorough resource library of anti-propaganda, anarchist literature, poetry and much much more. Being in a touring band one could not help but to admire crimethinc's massive street presence nation wide (and beyond) and their aggressive guerilla-style campaigning.

My initial copy of the DIY Guide #2 alchemized into dust amidst a glorious blaze of molten steel and exhaust just outside of Kissimee, FL. I obtained the second, 3 weeks later and 3,000 miles North West, on the crowded flyer rack of Singles Going Steady in Seattle, WA. Although I've never tried the herbal abortion we've employed many of these do-it-yourself stratagems to varying degrees of success.

Totally awesome super DIY punk/hardcore zine from Ebullition Records owner Kent McClard. Without a doubt one of the most important HC zines of the 90s and definitely one of the main inspirations behind my first attempts at zine making. You can find a majority of the 50 issues in high quality, digital format at OPERATION PHOENIX RECORDS

Overview:
People everywhere having been making zines, basically, since the invention of the photocopier and for every conceivable reason, including politics, music, comics, art, poetry, feminism, anarchism, veganism and solely for the purpose of offending people. Those lucky enough to be paying attention in the early and mid 90s witnessed an incredible zine culture renaissance which can be partially accredited to the lax hiring policies of the 24hr Kinkos.
